Michaela McGuire on why she's looking forward to having Rebecca Makkai as part of this year's Festival:

"The Great Believers is a stunning, deeply felt page-turner of a novel, and among the first books to fully explore the aftermath of the AIDS crisis. Beginning in Makkai’s native Chicago in 1985, it follows a circle of friends who begin to die, one by one, until only two remain in the present day, and have to hold the full weight of the memories, love and trauma of the small group. This novel isn’t as horrifying as Hanya Yanighara’s A Little Life, but Rebecca’s beautifully expressed meditations and observations about friendship and love do rival the loveliest moments between Hanya’s characters."
